About the Region

The Astrakhan Region is located in the south of Russia, in the lower course of the Volga River, on the coast of the Caspian Sea. It borders the Republic of Kalmykia, Volgograd Oblast, Samara Oblast and the Republic of Kazakhstan. The region is a transport hub of international significance: the Volga–Caspian canal connects the Caspian Sea with the Volga basin and with the world ocean.
