Volodarsky District

Volodarsky District is located in the south-eastern part of the Astrakhan Region and is one of the key municipalities of the Volga River delta. Its territory is unique: it is cut by numerous rivers, channels and eriks, which divide it into 366 large and small islands. The district borders the Krasnoyarsky, Privolzhsky and Kamyzyaksky districts of the region, the Republic of Kazakhstan to the east, and is washed by the waters of the Caspian Sea to the south. The chief wealth of Volodarsky District is its aquatic bioresources. Its location in the Volga delta accounts for an outstanding diversity of fish: more than 60 species are found in the local waters. Sturgeon species and their caviar are of particular value. The territory is also known for its unique lotus fields and other natural landmarks. Part of the Astrakhan Biosphere Nature Reserve and 10 natural monuments, including spawning grounds and botanical sites, are located within the district. These resources create enormous potential for ecological and educational tourism. The economy of the district is clearly specialised in agriculture and fishing. Volodarsky District is the undisputed leader of the Astrakhan Region in fish catch, accounting for 51% of the total volume of aquatic bioresources extracted in the region. Animal husbandry accounts for 60% of the district's total agricultural output.
