The City of Astrakhan is the administrative centre of the Astrakhan Region, located 1,534 kilometres south-east of Moscow. The city is situated on eleven islands, covers an area of 20,869 ha and is divided into four districts (Kirovsky, Sovetsky, Leninsky and Trusovsky). Astrakhan is an important transport hub in the south of Russia. It operates river and sea ports of the Volga-Caspian basin, a junction of railway lines and highways, and an international airport. Its location in the Caspian Depression, in the Volga delta, with rich natural resources, promotes the development of the fishing, fruit and vegetable, chemical and petrochemical industries, as well as shipbuilding. A key node of the North-South international transport corridor.
